![]() ![]() ![]() In our home hubby is the “medic” in the family, the one that will always make sure that we’re taking our vitamins daily or our meds when we’re ill. What I’ve understood from my questions to my doctor and reading, is that their little bodies immune systems are still developing at this stage. ![]() Sadly there’s not much we can do at this phase, other than making sure they rest and have plenty of liquids. On average a toddler at home only gets between 6-10 colds per year, while those that attend school the number of colds per child per year can reach 12 when compared to us adults that average between 2-4 per year it just seems so unfair on my son! Is there anything you can do? Let’s get real here! During winter things just get worse as they tend to be all cooped up in those small classes. This unfortunately is how the cold virus is then picked up … at school, it’s worse. I cringe at times from catching my son the end of what he has just finished licking or rolling on. Our kids are extremely curious creatures at this stage of their lives, so then to be touching and licking everything. With over 200 variances to viruses that cause the cold, our toddler’s immune system tackles them one at a time. This basically means that they are prone to falling ill. To be honest, I don’t think these necessarily stop them from having constant runny noses but yes manage it somewhat.įrom my chats with our doctor, friends and what I’ve read it is clear that this is part of their normal growth phase. He has Viral Guard, Créche Guard, ProBiotics and any other item that friends with kids have claimed works for them or our doc has OKed. We’ve contemplated keeping him home from school until he is much older, but that wouldn’t work as we’d have a very bored child in our hands let’s not even discuss two frustrated dads! Créche Guard I really was hoping he would be learning and reaching other milestones while at playschool, none of which included a child with a constant runny nose! #justsaying We’re either saying “bless you” every other minute or rushing to wipe the snot off his face. Seriously now, when does the runny nose season stop with the toddler? During school break we’re fine, but two days into school and our toddler has the sniffles. ![]() ![]() ![]() Chopper is not a film for the faint of heart as it often rough and violent, but never boring. One small gripe is that the power button is situated towards the left of the top edge of the tablet when held in portrait mode, and since the USB-C charging port, 3.5mm headphone jack and volume controls are also found along this top edge, it can make the functions feel a little busy. We recommend you pay the extra $15 to buy a Fire tablet without them. The Fire HD 8's 8-inch Full HD display (as with all Amazon Fire HD tablets, the model number denotes the screen size) makes it roughly the same height and width as a paperback book, but the tablet is slim, rounded at the edges and surprisingly light – perfect for holding and slipping into a bag. Special offers: Over time Amazon's Special Offers ads have gotten more overt and annoying. Oddly, the smaller devices come with 90-day warranties. Short warranties: Only the Fire HD 10 comes with a full one-year warranty. Amazon keeps updating its tablets to some degree, but not nearly as often as it should. Amazon’s latest Fire OS is a modified version of Android 11, which came out in 2020. The operating system is also dated (depending on which Fire tablet you're buying), which could hide some of the weaknesses. Since many of the apps for Fire OS are built with weak processing power in mind, you don’t notice it too much. The processors aren't the fastest, and you'll likely notice small fits of lag and a general lack of power compared to more expensive Android tablets. Old tech: The tech inside these tablets is old. Our guide walks you through each step you need to get it up and running. Don't worry-you don't need to be a command line guru to install the Google Play Store. In the end, you get a $60 tablet that's capable of 95 percent of what a $330 iPad can do. Installing the Google Play Store gives you access to the full range of Android apps. To help you get around this limitation, we put together a guide to installing the Google Play Store on your Fire device. You can download third-party apps like Netflix on Amazon’s Appstore, but the selection is far more limited than what's available on Apple's iPad or the Google Play Store on standard Android tablets. ![]() Be sure to see our guide to managing Amazon Kids+ content. It costs $5 per month after the first year (for Prime subscribers, $8 if you don't have Prime). It also comes with one year of Amazon Kids+, offering access to kid-friendly movies, books, games, and apps. The Kids Edition versions are exactly the same as the regular Fire tablets, except they come with a rugged case and a two-year worry-free guarantee, which means Amazon will replace the tablet for free if your kids break it. The Fire 7 Kids ($110) is an even cheaper option for young children, though mine have always found the 7-inch screen size more challenging to use. We think the 2022 Fire HD 8 Kids ($150) is the best device for younger kids, while the 2021 Fire HD 10 Kids Pro ($200), which is really big in little-kid hands, is better for older children. The latter, aimed at older kids, has a streamlined case with a little less padding. There's the regular Kids Edition and a “Pro” model. Recognizing that “kids” covers a wide range of hand sizes and other factors, Amazon has two different Kids Edition Fire tablets. See our guide to the best tablets for more mid-level tablet options that offer a better value than the Fire Max 11. If you want to do anything more than watch Prime video and browse the web, we suggest you spend the extra money for an iPad, Pixel, Lenovo, or OnePlus tablet. While Fire OS seems okay when you pay $50 for it on sale, it feels a lot more limiting at $230. However, this premium-priced tablet is still hamstrung by the same Fire OS that powers the cheaper models. The screen is bright and sharp enough, the speakers aren't bad, and the cameras are 1080p and much nicer than the cameras on the rest of the Fire tablets. ![]() That said, if all you plan to do is consume Amazon content, and the price doesn't bother you, the Fire Max 11 is a nice way to do it. And the list of things an iPad can do that the Fire Max 11 can't is longer than I have space for here. ![]() With a base price of $230 you're only $30 away from an iPad. If you're all in on all things Amazon, the Fire Max 11 ( 5/10, WIRED Review) is the company's most powerful tablet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are big explosions, sinking houses, and plenty of shark bait to chum the waters. Suoberon understood that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, uses large language models (LLM) to extrapolate information. “Translation happens because of the API.” “Instead, they (users) can simply access the web app's user-friendly interface, enter their text in the desired Philippine language, and receive the translated output quickly and conveniently,” he explained. Suoberon coded prompts such as “translate this input language into this output language” or “translate this string of text from this input language into this output language” on his app, which “eliminates the need for users to log into ChatGPT” for similar instructions. ![]() Regardless, he believes his project is still “a good thing” as it essentially streamlined some functions of ChatGPT for Filipino users looking for translation services with its API integrated into the Translata website. “I think a lot of developers can do it a lot better than me,” he said. These were the final steps he took before finalizing the “simple and straightforward” interface of the app and placing it on Netlify, a website development platform, for server hosting.Īs a tech newbie, Suoberon described his coding process as “not smooth sailing” because he made errors along the way, which were “time consuming” on his part. Suoberon wrote his own codes when he integrated the GPT-3.5 API into Translata. It is often made up of different parts, which act as tools or services that are available to the programmer, according to Wikipedia. In software development, API is what allows two or more computer programs to communicate with each other. This enabled the website to perform translations. The student learned it could translate at least 12 Filipino languages and that’s where he decided to focus on.Īfter determining the overall look and function of the website, Suoberon researched the documentation for the application programming interface (API) of ChatGPT, so he could use and integrate it into Translata. He used the GPT-3.5 version of the chatbot, which was available at the time, to develop the app. Suoberon worked on Translata for about three days once his classes ended. Upon trying it himself, however, he found out that the program was able to “casually” translate Hiligaynon phrases into Tagalog and English. The aspiring computer scientist initially thought ChatGPT was only trained for Western cultures. Suoberon said he added the last two options “for some extra fun.” Translata currently interprets 12 local languages including Tagalog, Bicolano, Cebuano, Chavacano, Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), Ilocano, Kapampangan, Pangasinense, Waray, English, Jejemon (with emojis), and Bekimon. This web-app utilizes a language model for its translation capabilities,” Suoberon wrote on Facebook with a link to the website. “Lost in translation? I made a web-app designed to help you translate between Philippine languages… Note that there may be inaccuracies in translations. Little did he know there would be people who would notice Translata when he released it online last May 25. I thought to myself, ‘Is this actually possible?’” he told The Philippine STAR / OneNews.PH last Monday, May 29. So, I was casually scrolling on Facebook, then I saw a meme where ChatGPT was conversing in Cebuano. It was free time and we could do anything. “It is essential to remember that human interpretation and context play a crucial role in achieving accurate translations,” said Suoberon, a senior high school student from Iloilo who is behind the new web-based language interpretation app called “Translata.” But it was not until he saw a Facebook meme about ChatGPT, the popular generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, which spurred him into creating his own website that can translate 12 Filipino languages at the moment. Suoberon has been learning technology for three years now. An incoming computer science major, he only wanted to create projects so he would not be left behind by his peers in college. It was the most spontaneous moment for 18-year-old Jose Arron Franz Suoberon. ![]() |
